A common misconception about hemorrhoids medication is that it must be an external application to be effective. It seems logical that since hemorrhoids protrude from the skin, applying a gel directly to the hemorrhoids would be the fastest and best solution. The problem with these medications, however, is that they only provide temporary relief and almost never cure the most severe cases. In fact, some studies suggest that simple gels such as petroleum jelly or aloe can sometimes ease the pain of hemorrhoids and reduce swelling almost as well as chemical over-the-counter drugs.
