Prozac and Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is a hormonally induced depression in women who have just given birth. Theoretically the womans brain chemistry is significantly altered by the abrupt withdrawal of high levels of hormones that maintained the pregnancy and at the same time are faced with a physically taxing and emotionally stressful task.
In the recent past, since the 1990s, physicians have been prescribing SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) drugs, including Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft, for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and seasonal affective disorder. The class of drug, SSRI, are the first choice medication for treating postpartum depression (PPD) because of their apparent high safety profile and because they are considered safe for nursing and pregnant women.
